Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao’s upcoming film titled Mental Hai Kya has recently drawn criticism from mental health experts and associations for its title and posters. In a letter to the CBFC, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) objected to the film’s title and imagery stating that it was, “discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons who suffer from mental disorders.”

While the production house behind Mental Hai Kya, Balaji Motion Pictures, has defended their film saying that, “The makers of the film, believe that their movie - Mental Hai Kya will encourage people to embrace their individuality and distinctiveness,” the lead actor, Kangana Ranaut has now gone ahead and dragged her “silly ex” and the “nepotism” debate into the controversy.

Kangana Ranaut’s sister, Rangoli Chandel, who is active on Twitter in a series of tweets on Saturday first stated that she should be considered as Kangana’s official spokesperson since the actor herself is not on social media. She then went on to clarify that what ever she tweeted was with Kangana’s permission and consultation. Rangoli then shared with her followers on Twitter the story of how Kangana’s “silly ex along with nepotism gang attacked her just to publicly embarrass and discredit her, they called her mental and bipolar.... endless jokes and memes were made with the intention of insulting and harassing her, rather than feeling humiliated or defensive Kangana pledged to fight the stigma attached to the illness, MHK is a story f fight against this very prejudice Kangana faced 2 years ago.”

While some Twitterati have accused Rangoli of playing the victim card again, it remains to be seen how the people who have been dragged into this controversy (without their names being mentioned) now react to this.

Meanwhile, Deepika Padukone’s The Life Love Laugh Foundation too has pulled up the team of Mental Hai Kya for reinforcing stereotypes via their posters.
