Director Went to Everyone Before He Came to Taapsee and Me: Bhumi
Bhumi Pednekar reacts to criticism against her and Tapsee Pannu in ‘Saand ki Aankh.’
From the time the first look and posters for Saand ki Aankh came out, there were doubts regarding Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar playing Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar. The real-life sisters-in-law made made history by becoming the world’s oldest and second-oldest sharpshooters in their 60s.
While Taapsee and Bhumi play younger versions of the characters too, for a majority of the film they use make up and prosthetics to appear older. Many netizens wondered out loud why older actors weren’t cast instead. The criticism increased after the first trailer of Saand ki Aankh was released on Monday 24 September, which almost entirely features Bhumi & Taapsee in their old-age avatars.
Bhumi Pednekar spoke exclusively to The Quint about the reaction her role has received.
When the first look of Saand Ki Aankh came out there were people who said that could they have chosen actors who were that age? What do you think?
I’ll tell you what, I’m glad that they didn’t because I got to play this character. But I do feel that that’s something that the maker should comment on. Tushar’s been trying to make this film for four years and he finally came to Taapsee and me after four years and that’s when this film happened. So I am sure he’s done the round. I know he’s gone everywhere but again I am not really going to dwell into it. That’s been his journey and he should discuss it.
Saand Ki Aankh is directed by newcomer Tushar Hiranandani and produced by Anurag Kashyap and Reliance Entertainment. It is set to release during Diwali.
