Vishal Bhardwaj’s much awaited film Rangoon, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan, was reportedly shown to a select few from the film industry for feedback, and Shahid’s father Pankaj Kapur was one of them.

Though he’s rarely vocal with both criticism and praise, the veteran actor’s reaction to Shahid’s performance after watching the film, reportedly left the young actor feeling numb and emotional. According to an Indian Express report, Shahid wasn’t invited for the screening, but he made sure he was at the venue, just to see his father’s reaction. This is what Pankaj Kapur reportedly told Vishal Bhardwaj after watching Rangoon-

I couldn’t recognise my son in the film. He is playing Nawab Malik and I don’t see Shahid in there.

Shahid Kapoor considers this to be the highest praise his father could give an actor.

For me, this is a huge compliment as my father doesn’t say such things very often. He had once said something during Haider, and it was a very emotional moment for me. He is very honest about these things and he is very honest to the art, so he would never say something that he wouldn’t mean. This was very special for me and I wait for these compliments from him. I am very happy that he liked my work in Rangoon.

Vishal Bhardwaj is known for his unconventional pairings, edgy adaptations and deriving the most from every actor he works with. Going by Pankaj Kapur’s praise, Rangoon is likely to be no less.

The film hits theatres on 24 February.
