‘Duryodhan: Then & Now’ - Catching Up With Puneet, Siddhanth Issar

Bollywood

Father-son duo Puneet and Siddhanth Issar will be seen in the theatre adaption of the Mahabharata directed by Puneet. He is best remembered as Duryodhan from the 1988 television series Mahabharata which was created by BR Chopra. The show went on to become one of the most iconic shows of its time and while there have been other television and film adaptations, nothing comes close to that. Reminiscing those days,
Puneet said,

We were signed for the show in 1986 and began shooting only in 1988 so we had a lot of time for research and rehearsal and I think that showed in the series.

The play adaptation however will be from the perspective of Duryodhan, and that is the different that Puneet wants to bring about. “There have been several versions of the Mahabharata - in books, film and even in poetry but the challenge for me was to make it different,” says Puneet. His son Siddhanth will be playing the younger version of Duryodhan while Puneet will be playing the older one.

These are big shoes for Siddhanth to fill, but he seems undeterred. “I’m playing an adolescent version of Duryodhan so that’s a fresh perspective I am bringing to the fore. My father has immortalised Duryodhan, so that’s obviously incomparable.”

Puneet suffered the wrath of the industry when he accidentally injured Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of Coolie. Bachchan was seriously injured and was in hospital for months. Puneet was ostracized and lost out on a lot of work because of the same. Ask him if the perception still remains and he says,

Not at all, see one can’t do anything about the perception that exists around you. Mr Bachchan and I both know the truth that it was just an accident. And he’s been extremely gracious about it and so has his family, so no ill-feelings really.
