It’s been confirmed that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh, who was convicted of allegedly spying for India and sentenced to death in Pakistan. Aishwarya has been signed on for the role in a bio-pic titled Sarabjit, which will be directed by Omung Kumar.

The producer of Sarabjit, Sandeep Singh confirmed the news, “ Yes it is true, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be playing the role of Dalbir Kaur Singh. The role demanded a very strong character with a powerful aura, and Aishwarya perfectly fits the bill. We are confident that she will do justice to this role.”

Sarabjit was arrested in Pakistan in 1991 and sentenced to death for allegedly carrying out four bomb blasts. His family including his sister Dalbir maintained that he was innocent and fought for his release for decades. Sarabjit died after being wounded by fellow inmates in a Pakistani jail in May 2013.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback film Jazbaa, an action drama directed by Sanjay Gupta is slated to release on 9th October 2015. By signing on to play Dalbir in Sarabjit, helmed by Omung Kumar of Mary Kom fame, Aishwarya is definitely eyeing the big awards next year.

Sarabjit will be shot in Punjab in October 2015 in 70 day single schedule and is slated to premiere in Cannes in May 2016.
