Bollywood stars have warmly embraced the French Riviera and made Cannes their summer getaway over the years. The glitzy, glamorous Cannes Film Festival is known for showcasing the finest films across the globe. But it’s also the place for tinsel town beauties for striking the right pose for international media, who descend on this prestigious red carpet to archive such moments.

The 69th Cannes Film Festival has begun and we at The Quint tell you why Bollywood Cannes do without it.

Hisss! She’s Back at Cannes

Why Bollywood ‘Cannes’ Do Without Its International Red Carpet

Forget Bollywood, if there is one woman who Cannes can’t do without it is Mallika Sherawat.

Woman, how do you manage to do it? The Jat girl powers her way to the red carpet every single year without a movie in her arsenal, or any cool brand endorsements to ride on. She not just shocks the media with her appearance, but also Indians.

Kis kis ki kismet!

Cannes is like the IPL for a few Bollywood actors. These actors might be jobless, but they cash on their celeb status at the two-week festival. And while these stars step up their game, they miss no opportunity to circulate their CVs (Cannes vitae) to the who’s who of Hollywood.

Okay. Mallika Sherawat is an exception. We don’t know how she makes it happen but she manages to be at Cannes every year. But for the rest – Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Katrina Kaif – it’s a paid vacation (like they can’t afford one) in the coastal French town.

Where else would you get paid to chose from multiple ‘unpronounceable’ designer gowns, getting selfies with Hollywood biggies, flaunting your acting skills and promoting ‘Make in India’?

It happens only in Cannes!

Two-week of Cannes is enough maal for Indian channels and publications to keep them going for a year’s supply on entertainment news. From the worst-dressed to the best-dressed. From who spoke what to who ate what.

’Cuz media thinks everybody should have Cannes-o-khabar!

It doesn’t matter if your film tanks at the Box Office or gets no roaring reactions back home. What matters is that the film wins hearts at Cannes.

And there is a reason why Indians ‘cannes’ understand Anurag Kashyap’s films because he aims for the international audience. With Bombay Talkies, Ugly and his two-part Gangs of Wasseypur all showcased at Cannes, this year the director returns with Raman Raghav 2.0.

Clearly Anurag Kashyap too Cannes do without it!
