Rajeev Masand’s annual actors roundtable this year on News 18 has Shahid Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Sushant Singh Rajput, Ranbir Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh in attendance. These are the actors who delivered powerful performances this year and an interesting bit of the conversation on the table revolved around actors and insecurities.

Masand refers to an interview in which Amitabh Bachchan had candidly admitted that he regretted taking a 3 year sabbatical from work. Bachchan had said that he shouldn’t have done it because - “...in this profession there is always someone waiting around the corner, someone better than you, better looking than you, more popular and he will take your place.”

Speaking to Masand, Bachchan admits that it’s very egoistic for an actor to suddenly decide that he’s taking a break for 3 years. “Because every day you learn something in front of the camera and to just say I’m taking a break and then come back and assume that you are going to be in the same position is a fallacy, you’re never like that,” says Bachchan.

The veteran superstar also claims that he wasn’t surprised by the difference that he saw when he resumed work.

I wasn’t surprised. I was hearing and seeing and knowing what was happening. And then when I made some attempts and made some movies it didn’t work. The whole equation had changed, the crowd is not attracted to you any more, people don’t look at you the same way as they look at you before. You can enter a restaurant and cause mayhem and you can enter again and no one looks at you. You go through that phase, you realise the differences. You just know that this is bound to happen and you have to accept it.

Bachchan also points out to how the crowd reacted more excitedly on seeing Ranbir than on seeing him during a recent interview. “In fact, while were were walking in here, nobody looked at me, they were all saying ‘Hi Ranbir, how are you doing?’ so you realise that... those are the differences you notice,” says a candid Bachchan while Ranbir looks on slightly embarrassed.

Ranbir then goes on to give his point of few about actors being insecure:

I am in a growing phase as an actor, I haven’t reached the acceptance stage which Amit uncle was talking about, where tomorrow this is not going to be there, I won’t have the opportunities, somebody better is going to take my place - I haven’t reached that stage yet.

Shahid ends the discussion on a philosophical note by saying, “This medium is driven by success... it’s not driven by excellence or achievements, and no one knows what success is or how to get it. I think that’s an insecurity that lies in this profession because of the nature of it.”
