After India defeated Pakistan on Sunday, 16 June, by 89 runs (DLS method) in a rain-interrupted ICC World Cup 2019 clash at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium. Fans, including celebrities and politicians, congratulated the team. Home Minister Amit Shah took to Twitter and called the win “another strike” by India.

Pakistan were dealt an early blow in the chase when Vijay Shankar dismissed Imam-ul-Haq off his very first ball of the match. Bhuvneshwar Kumar suffered a hamstring injury after bowling the fourth ball and brought on to finish the fifth over, Shankar sent in a full delivery that swung back into the left-handed Imam and hit his pads. Imam decided not to review the decision and Pakistan lost their first wicket inside the first five overs.

‘Leave Cricket Aside’

A few members of Twitter thought Amit Shah’s comparison of India’s win to a ‘strike’ was in bad taste. One Twitter user said the statement was “stupid” and “jingoistic”, adding that the statement “reflects his lack of statesmanship and understanding of competitive sports”.

Another Twitter user asked the home minister to “leave cricket aside”.

Alt News Founder Pratik Sinha said, “Sowing poison for votes doesn’t ever end.”

Columnist Mandeep Singh Bajwa questioned the priorities of the government. “Not to forget that both Amit Shah & Rajnath Singh had nothing to say about the 5 CRPF Jawans killed at Anantnag nor the 13 IAF pers killed in the AN-32 crash,” he wrote.

One Twitter user listed out the things that need a ‘surgical strike’. Corruption, bad health conditions, rape and communalism figured in the list.

Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai said, “it’s a great win but it’s a cricket match and not war: no one died out there. Let’s do the chest thumping on 14th July!”

Journalist Rammanohar Reddy said the comment was ‘disgusting’. “Somebody tell him this is a game not a war,” he wrote.
