Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, March 6, for his first public rally in the state after the BJP signed a poll pact with the ruling AIADMK. He announced that the Centre will rename the Chennai Central Railway Station after late Chief Minister MG Ramachandran.
But many expressed their opposition to PM Modi, by using #GoBackSadistModi on Twitter, which became a top trending hashtag on Wednesday.
Twitterati said there is absolutely no need to change the name of the railway station as there is an MGR Memorial at the Marina Beach.
“Where were you when cyclone Gaja destroyed Tamil Nadu,” another Twitter user asked.
People also commented about Modi’s ‘silence’ after Thoothukudi violence and the controversial implementation of NEET in Tamil Nadu.
Another user said this rally was just an election gimmick.
Earlier, Modi had visited Tamil Nadu on March 1 and talked about the capture of IAF pilot in Pakistan. That day too, #GoBackModi was trending on Twitter.
“I am proud that India’s first woman defence minister is from Tamil Nadu. It makes every Indian proud that the brave Wing Commander Abhinandan hails from Tamil Nadu,” Modi said in his speech in Tamil Nadu.
One Twitter user from Tamil Nadu quoted this and said, “Don’t think you can lure any one from Periyar’s land with this gimmicks.”
Twitter users took a dig at the BJP and PM Modi who were confident about the party making inroads in the state.
This is not the first time Twitter users in Tamil Nadu have come up with this hashtag. When the prime minister visited Madurai on 27 January to lay the foundation for construction of AIIMS in Madurai, the Tamil Nadu Twitterati had protested with the same hashtag.
Even in the southern state of Kerala, Modi’s visits haven’t been taken too well. When he visited Kerala to inaugurate the Kollam bypass earlier on 15 January, Twitter went abuzz with the Malayalam hashtag OduModiKandamVazhi which asked him to take a hike.
Some Twitter users used both #WelcomeBackAbhinandan and #GoBackModi in the same tweet saying “PM Modi hails from opportunism”.
‘Modi Is Not India’
Meanwhile, BJP and Modi also received flak on Twitter for a tweet from the official handle of PMO India that said “A few parties guided by Modi hatred have started hating India.”
“This is not the type of tweet that should come from an official govt account,” tweeted one user.
When did Modi become India, asked another Twitter user.
Others commented on the ‘cavelierly’ manner of the tweet and said asking fundamental questions to a PM is the fundamental right of a citizen.
