There is a storm brewing in West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee is at the helm of it. By stopping the CBI from questioning Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar over two Ponzi schemes, arresting them and sitting on a dharna to “save the federal structure”, Banerjee has launched a full on attack on the Centre and without doubt, grabbed eyeballs.

While the questions of her being right, wrong or hypocritical made rounds on social media, there was one thing Twitterati couldn’t ignore – her audacity.

Right wing handles tweeted that this act of Mamata’s along with her refusal to give permission for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Bengal rally show that she is a dictator. There were also tweets that said that Mamata is involved in the Rose Valley and Sarada scams, and that her actions betray a fear of Modi.

But Didi supporters hit back at these allegations by asking why the CBI was not interested in BJP leader Mukul Roy, who is also an accused in the chit fund case.

There were also arguments that it was the Modi government which destroyed the credibility of the CBI and it was only fair that the states have begun to fight back.

Others commented that everything aside, this seems like a smart political move.

There were also tweets that said it was time for the imposition of President’s Rule in West Bengal.

But Mamata has dared the Centre to announce President’s Rule and see how Bengal reacts. Be it the Opposition Rally on 19 January, or denying permission to Amit Shah’s Rath Yatra, Mamata seems to be going all out against the Centre. And the ‘blocking CBI’ move comes at a time when the institution is trapped in a web of controversies. And with many leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal offering their support to her, it is safe to assume that the drama is yet to unfold in West Bengal.
