‘Won’t Let Police Stop Child Marriages’: BJP Rajasthan Leader

In the run-up to the upcoming Rajasthan elections, a BJP candidate allegedly promised that there will be no hindrance to child marriages if she is voted into power, The Times of India reported on 3 December.

Sojat Returning Officer Ayub Khan has issued a notice to Shobha Chauhan, seeking an explanation over the alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct ahead of the election.

A video of Chauhan purportedly making this remark was doing the rounds online.

“We have satta (power) and sangathan. We won’t let the police intervene in child marriages.”

Chauhan made this remark while addressing a gathering the Sneh Sammelan at the Peepaliya Kala region in Sojat, Pali district. She was reportedly told during the event that the police had interrupted child marriages among the members of the Dewasi community.

199 assembly seats of Rajasthan will go to polls on 7 December and the results will be announced on 11 December.
