With the Lok Sabha elections 2019 underway, Congress President Rahul Gandhi has been on an interview spree. But what is the aim behind the entire English media blitz and its timing when more than half of the phases of the polls are over?

To analyse the Congress party’s media strategy, party spokesperson Sanjay Jha, senior journalist Anita Katyal and senior journalist and commentator Madhavan Narayanan joined in on a discussion.

‘Rahul Gandhi Has Been Extremely Accessible To Media’

Congress Spokesperson Sanjay Jha clarified the air around the timings of Gandhi’s interviews. “Mr Gandhi has given over a hundred press conferences over the last couple of years,” he said. “We have expressed views on everything from the Rafale corruption to the destruction of the institutes of governance,” Jha added.

He simultaneously took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “The world’s largest democracy has a prime minister who hasn’t held a single press conference.”

With the interviews coming after polling has taken place in locations such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru, could they be a ‘message to potential allies’?

Jha replied to this question, saying, “Mr Gandhi being the principle campaigner has been criss-crossing the entire country.”

‘Priyanka’s Entry Too Late’

Speaking about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into active politics, Katyal said that she should have entered politics much earlier in order to work towards reviving Congress in a place like UP, where it is marginalised.

Madhavan Narayanan stressed Priyanka’s role as a ‘mascot’ for the party, a part of the party’s campaign strategy more than an organiser in the party.

People on Ground Unaware of NYAY?

Narayanan also pointed out the importance of Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY) for Congress. According to him, the party did not have a lot to approach people with before NYAY scheme.

However, Katyal said that the people on ground are still unaware of NYAY and that the cadre of the party has failed to take the scheme to the people.
