Bengal Poll Officials Approach CEO Over Trinamool Leader's Threats

An association of polling officials on Saturday, 27 April, approached West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer seeking stringent measures, including house arrest, against Trinamool Congress’ Birbhum district chief Anubrata Mondal to ensure free and fair polls on Monday.

“We have information that ruling party leader Anubrata Mondal is threatening polling officials to conduct polls in his party's favour. There is also information regarding removal of central forces in case they become too active in any booth,” an association of poll officials said in a written complaint.

Would Not Have Needed Surgical Strikes If Sadhvi Cursed Masood Azhar: Digvijaya Singh

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday, 27 April, took a dig at BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur, saying that there would have been no need of surgical strikes if she had cursed Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar.

Addressing an election rally in Bhopal, Singh said, “Thakur says she had cursed ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, who had given supreme sacrifice for the country and is considered a martyr. There would have been no need of surgical strikes if she had cursed Pakistan based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar.”

Opposition Parties Complain to EC Against BJP's Name Under Its Symbol on EVMs

Opposition parties on Saturday, 27 April approached the Election Commission alleging display of party name only under the BJP symbol on EVMs during a mock poll in West Bengal’s Barrackpore constituency. However, the poll panel said the same insignia has been under use since 2013.

A delegation of opposition parties comprising senior Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Ahmed Patel and Trinamool Congress’ Dinesh Trivedi and Derek O’Brien met Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora over the issue. They demanded that either all such EVMs be removed from the remaining phases of elections or names of other parties be added too.

RLD Mathura Candidate Raises Questions Over Safety of EVMs

RLD Mathura candidate Narendra Singh raised questions over the safety and security of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

“Since the EVMs kept in the Mandi Samiti may be damaged by rats, we want an assurance about the safety of the machines,” the RLD candidate said.

He added that though he had written to the district magistrate (DM) about it three days ago, no action had been taken.

Gambhir Responds to Complaints of Holding Two Voter IDs

BJP candidate for East Delhi, Gautam Gambhir, while talking to news agency ANI responded to AAP leader Atishi Marlena’s complaint against him, that he is holding two voter ID’s.

Responding to the complaints, Gambhir said that those who don’t have a vision make such allegations.

“When you don’t have a vision and have done nothing in the last 4.5 years, you make such allegations, EC will decide on this matter. You don’t do such negative politics when you have a vision.”

After DMK, Vaiko Opposes Any Action Against 3 AIADMK MLAs

MDMK founder Vaiko, on Sunday 28 April, claimed the move by ruling AIADMK for action against three of its MLAs for siding with rival leader TTV Dhinankaran was "only to protect" the K Palaniswami government as it will 'lose' majority after the outcome of bypolls to 22 assembly seats.

Government whip S Rajendran's petition with Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal seeking action against the MLAs A Prabu, E Rathinasabapathy and V T Kalaiselvan was being "seen" as a step towards their possible disqualification, he said adding the Speaker should 'ignore' the plea.

In a statement here, Vaiko claimed the May 23 results of polls to both the 38 Lok Sabha seats and by-elections to 22 assembly segments in the state will go against the ruling BJP at the Centre and the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.


Once on the Sidelines, Pakistani Hindus Hold Sway in Jodhpur

Not long ago, Pakistani Hindus living in Jodhpur held little political sway. However, as time passed and they grew in numbers, the community has emerged as an important vote bank, with manifestos of political parties promising to fulfill their basic needs like water and electricity.

According to Hindu Singh Soda, who runs a charity for Pakistani Hindus, around 20,000 members of the community in Jodhpur are eligible to vote.

There are around five lakh Pakistani Hindus in other districts like Barmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner. Of these two lakh have been granted Indian citizenship, Soda told PTI.

These people are eligible to apply for Indian citizenship only after living in the country for seven years and till then, they stay here on extended visas, he said.

Modi Never Did Caste Politics, Says Jaitley

Hitting out at the Opposition, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has never done caste politics and is inspired by nationalism.

"How is the Prime Minister's caste relevant? He has never done caste politics. He has only done developmental politics. He is inspired by nationalism," Jaitley said, joining the war of words on Twitter over Modi coming from the "most backward caste".

He further said those who are deceiving the poor in the name of caste will not succeed and added that "they have only amassed wealth in the name of caste politics. The Prime Minister's assets are not even 0.01% when compared to the First Family of the BSP or the RJD."

The minister was responding to tweets of senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav with regard to a statement made by the prime minister at an election rally at Kannauj.


PM Modi Meets Sunny Deol, Tweets 'Gadar' Reference

Actor Sunny Deol, the BJP candidate for Punjab's Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat, on Sunday met PM Narendra Modi.

Modi appreciated Deol's "humility and deep sense of passion for a better India".

"Happy to have met him today. We are all rooting for his victory in Gurdaspur. We both agree - Hindustan zindabad tha, hai, aur rahega (India will continue to prosper)," the PM tweeted, posting a picture with the actor. The line in Hindi was a reference to Deol’s dialogue from the film Gadar.

A case has been registered against Delhi Minister Gopal Rai on the complaint of the Election Commission flying squad, for violating the model code of conduct by distributing pamphlets without getting clearance from EC.
