The Election Commission of India on Thursday, 18 April, filed a complaint against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bangalore South candidate Tejasvi Surya for violating the Model Code of Conduct, reported Deccan Herald.

Soon after casting his ballot, Surya posted a video of himself urging voters to vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a tweet, Surya said, “I polled my vote. Did you? I'm initiating #VoteMaaDi challenge to encourage high voter turnout (sic).”

Hours later, he posted another message on his Twitter timeline urging people to vote.

“Dear karyakartas, Our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has entrusted this job in your capable hands. There are only few hours left until voting ends and I request each and every one of you to go door to door and request people to vote,” he wrote.

According to the Deccan Herald report, the EC’s flying squad has taken cognisance of the video and registered a case against Surya under the provisions of Representation of People’s Act.

The report also added that following the complaint, an FIR was registered against Surya, who has been asked to remove the videos.

“If the videos are not deleted, we will initiate strict action against him,” a police official at Siddapur police station told the daily.
