Shahid Afridi Ends 21-Year Career, Retires From Int’l Cricket

On Sunday, legendary Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi announced his retirement from international cricket, ending an illustrious and sometimes controversial 21-year career.

The 36-year-old star had already quit Test and ODI cricket but still skippered the Pakistan Twenty20 team at the 2016 world championships in India.

He stepped down as captain after the tournament but retained hopes of continuing his career in the sport's shortest format as a player.

Despite a less than average test cricket career, Afridi was prolific in ODIs.
He played 398 ODIs, scoring 8,064 runs, while taking 395 wickets – according to ESPN Cricinfo.

Afridi was a prolific all-rounder in Twenty 20 cricket, excelling during the format’s early days. He 98 matches with 1,405 runs and 97 wickets. Afridi was a prolific all-rounder in Twenty 20 cricket.

Over his two-decade long career, he was embroiled in a number of controversies with the Pakistan Cricket Board, and had earlier retired from ODI and Test cricket.

He held the record for the fastest ODI century, smashing a 100 runs of just 37 balls, in his very first innings against Sri Lanka in 1996.
