Salman Khan’s much-awaited Tubelight is going to hit the screens on 23 June but seveal early reviews of the film are already out. The film also stars Zhu Zhu, Matin Rey Tangu, Sohail Khan and Om Puri. The film is directed by Kabir Khan.
Here’s what Khaleej Times and FirstPost have to say about the Eid release of 2017.
A review in Khaleej Times by Arti Dani suggests the director stretched the movie beyond its limit and along the way, lost the plot.
The movie has good intentions but hardly any plot. With the running time of 150 minutes, the movie stretches too much. I felt manipulated by the director in making me cry. Tears hardly came organically like they did in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, where our eyes would become moist every time the child actor would cry. Many times emotions are forced upon us.
While the review suggested the chemistry between brothers, Sohail and Salman worked. Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo in the film did little to make an impression.
Shah Rukh Khan plays a crucial role in the film in one scene with Salman but their scene together, which talks about magic, hardly felt magical to me. The movie did not work for me in entirety.
Imran Mohammad of FirstPost also reviewed the film, but he held a slightly different opinion.
It’s all about Laxman. Even for someone who doesn’t watch Bollywood, it is easy to notice that this is a kind of character that Salman has never played before. He is not playing a macho, heroic role (what he is known for). In Tubelight, he plays a very vulnerable role and it is refreshing.

The reviewer also spoke about an important plot point which is going to put the recent gaffe by a journalist at a press conference into perspective.
When Matin Rey Tangu’s character is introduced in the film, Laxman has a mental block against him (because his brother has gone for the war against China. Tubelight is set against the 1962 Indo-China war). Later he finds out Matin’s character is not Chinese. This is actually a very interesting scene, because Salman’s prejudice is similar to what most Indians have towards our Northeastern friends.
We will have to see how this will impact the film’s box-office performance!
