Aboobacker Musalyar, a Sunni leader from Kerala, has made a controversial statement that gender equality is “un-Islamic” and “intellectually wrong.” He went on to add that women essentially are reproductive beings who can never equal men. He was addressing a Muslim Students Federation (MSF) camp in Kozhikode.

Musalyar has decided that women, poor things, have weaker rational faculties and aren’t good for very much. Women, apparently, do not have the power to “control the universe.” Needless to say, the misogyny did not go down well with men and women, irrespective of their religious beliefs.

The Quint spoke to Maryam Azwer and Rizowana Hussaini, two practising Muslim women, who had much to say in response to Musalyar.
