Politics and power - the dirty world everyone knows about, yet few speak of. What happens when a family knee-deep in the political world is faced with an attack? Will they stick together and fight it, or fight among themselves instead? The new show City of Dreams, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, explores these themes of politics and conflict.

Another theme that is brilliantly explored by the show is that of feminism. Set in the reality of a patriarchal world, women fight to get what they deserve. In the City of Dreams, women are the true heroes. They’re strong and level-headed, while men are hot-headed and constantly make silly mistakes.

While the storyline of City of Dreams is quite refreshing in itself, it’s the show’s characters that make it stand out. The nuanced onscreen personalities and the intricate detailing that has gone into developing the characters is path-breaking in many ways. No character has “chosen” good or evil. What makes them relatable is their will to try and be better - even though they fail because of the reality of their lives. Their insecurities, their dreams, their desires limit them time and again.

City of Dreams is streaming on Hotstar.
