In Lucknow, the month of Muharram is known as ‘shahi’ Muharram. The practice was introduced to the city by the Shia ruler of Awadh in 1838.

Unlike most other cities, several Hindus in Lucknow join in to observe Muharram. “Muharram in Lucknow is different from that of all other places,” says Taha, a devotee.
