Amidst a number of states giving loan waivers to farmers, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said “loan waivers have become fashion now.” He added, however, that “loans should be waived, but in extreme situations only.”

Naidu’s comments come only a few days after BJP states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh cleared farm loan waivers.

“It’s not a final solution; we have to take care of farmers.” Naidu said, talking at India's largest municipal bond programme in Mumbai.

Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district became the epicentre of violent protests in June after farmers demanded loan waivers and better prices for their produce.
