Before the Uttar Pradesh elections, Uma Bharti spoke to Barkha Dutt on The Quint about the Babri Masjid demolition and the making of the Ram Mandir.

She said that the day the masjid was demolished was the saddest day of LK Advani’s life.

I am proud that I participated in the Ram Mandir andolan. My ancestors would have been blessed had I sacrificed my life for the cause.

This comes just two months before the Supreme Court would name Uma Bharti, LK Advani, MM Joshi to be tried for criminal conspiracy in the razing of the 16th century mosque in 1992.

When asked if the issue of the mosque was important to the BJP camp during the election, this is what she had to say:

The movement has been on for 400 years. Scores of people have died in the Ayodhya dispute and it’s being debated whether Ram was born there or not. It needs to be decided whom the land belongs to. Often, land disputes can be settled out of court. The Ayodhya dispute can be resolved the same way that the issue of Somnath temple was.
