Storm and Lightning Strikes Kill 23 in Bihar

Stormy winds uprooted several trees across 8 districts of Bihar and lightning strikes caused 23 deaths on Sunday.

On 28 May, in Motihari and Bettiah, Bihar storm and lightning strike resulted in 23 deaths across the region. The lightning strikes across 8 districts killed 18 people. While the stormy winds blowing at a speed of about 50-70 Km/hr, uprooted several trees and collapsed walls, further raising the death toll to 23.

Anirudh Kumar, the Additional Secretary of the Disaster Management Department of Bihar reported that five people were killed in the West Champaran district due to the storm. Out of 18, five were killed in East Champaran, four in Jamui, one in West Champaran, two each in Munger, Bhagalpur and Madhepura and one each in Vaishali and Samastipur districts.

Anirudh Kumar also assured that an ex-gratia sum of Rs 4 lakh each will be paid to the families of the deceased.
