Would you dare ride a shark? A scuba diver mounted a whale shark in Indonesia’s Cenderawasih Bay, while his fellow divers filmed him holding on to the endangered creature’s fins. After outrage from conservationists, authorities identified the people in the video. Police have arrested the man seen riding the whale shark.

Whale sharks are classified as a protected species in Indonesia. Their slow movement makes them easy targets for hunters, leading to a decline in their population. The sharks are also often killed accidentally by fishing trawlers. The country’s marine law prevents divers from touching the species.
