On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shocked the country yet again by announcing NDA’s presidential nominee. When the pundits were speculating over the likely replacement of incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee, Ram Nath Kovind was not even in contention.

Yet, Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah named him as NDA’s pick for the post of India’s constitutional head. The news was well received in Uttar Pradesh – Kovind’s home state – and even better in Paraukh, his ancestral village.

The Quint visited this small village in Kanpur Dehat district and spoke to Ram Nath Kovind’s relatives.
