1. Karnataka May Get Its Own ‘State Flag’, Sparks Debate on Legality

If reports are to be believed, the southern state of Karnataka will soon have its own state flag.

The process is reportedly on to design and give statutory standing to a separate, state flag. With this, Karnataka will be the second state in the country to have a separate state flag, after Jammu and Kashmir.

2. Mayawati Resigns From Rajya Sabha for Being ‘Silenced’ on Dalit Issues

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati resigned from the Rajya Sabha on 18 July, after threatening to quit the Upper House earlier in the day.

Mayawati said she had decided to quit from the Rajya Sabha after she was asked to wrap up her impromptu speech on Saharanpur anti-Dalit violence.

3. As Venkaiah Naidu Resigns, Smriti Irani Gets His I&B Ministry

Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani has been given the additional charge of Information and Broadcast ministry, while Narendra Tomar has been given additional charge of Ministry of Urban Development after Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu resigned from his ministerial responsibilities.

Naidu stepped down as Union Minister after being nominated as the NDA’s vice presidential candidate on 17 July.

Ravi Shastri has gotten his way. The newly selected Indian cricket coach, back from his tennis-viewing holiday in England, sat down with the BCCI on Tuesday and effectively managed to overrule the board’s earlier decision. Who needs Zaheer Khan or Rahul Dravid anyway?

5. #AssamFloods – Raising a Baby Rhino Who Longs For His Mum

Marooned and with a lung infection, a 3-4 month old male rhino calf was separated from his mother. He was rescued on 15 July by a mobile veterinary service, and was brought to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) – an Assam Forest Department and Wildlife Trust of India facility.

For wildlife veterinarian Panjit Basumatary, the biggest challenge of hand rearing this 3-4 month rhinoceros calf is the absence of the mother rhino to whom the baby would be deeply attached for the first four years of his life.
