PV Sindhu: I Could Have Won The Final at Dubai Super Series Finals
PV Sindhu talks about her 2017 where she won 2 Super Series titles and also bagged a medal at World C’ship.
A year with an Olympic silver was always going to be a tough one to follow, but Indian shuttler PV Sindhu managed to maintain her position in women’s badminton with yet another stand-out season this 2017.
She started the year with a win at the Indian Open Super Series and then following a few low-key outings, made a fresh surge in the second half with a medal at the World Championships. The silver medal which Sindhu won in Glasgow was her third at the World Championships and she then followed it up with the title at the Korea Open Super Series. The year-ending Dubai World Super Series Finals had the world number 3 reach the finals once again, however, a three game defeat to Akane Yamaguchi meant she settled for a silver.
The Quint caught up with Sindhu on the sidelines of the Premier Badminton League in Guwahati and got her to choose her top moments of 2017 and her targets for 2018.
2016 was a tough year to beat, in terms of accomplishments, do you think you managed to do enough?
2017 was really good for me but 2016 was a different thing, that’s different. 2017 overall has been good. I am really happy with my performance. Definitely, winning the Super Series Finals’ silver at the end of the year, I am very happy with my performance. I could have won it but it just happened. Never mind. I will come back much stronger. Overall, it has been great.
The two silvers (at World Championships and Dubai World Super Series Finals) or the two Super Series titles, which one do you cherish most and will remember in a few years?
Every match is the same. See, Olympics you just can’t define because it comes once in four years. After that is the World Championships which (the final) was one of the longest matches. The Dubai World Super Series Finals was almost like the World Championships match. I was almost there. I really can’t pick one match.
