Every year, several people gather to watch Indian Navy performs a ‘beating the retreat’ ceremony at the Gateway of India in Mumbai on 4 December. The occasion is to celebrate the Navy Day. But why do we celebrate it of 4 December?

The answer is Operation Trident. This lethal offensive conducted by the Indian Navy on Karachi port wreaked severe damage and set the stage for Pakistan’s crushing defeat in the 1971 war.
