Amid the village panchayat’s Taliban like instructions and voices saying “Beat her, beat her”, a girl was tied to a pole and brutally assaulted. The shocking incident that took place in Bihar was even caught on camera.

Even when Bihar was notorious for booth capturing, asserting muscle power and hooliganism, crime against women was never a raging concern like it is now.

On 6 May, when the video of the incident of Kathia village in Bagaha became viral on social media, the police noticed the case and took action and arrested the four youths involved. The reason behind the incident was reportedly a triangular love-affair, after which the locals assaulted the girl in the presence of the Panchayat.

In the past few months, horrific incidents have surfaced in Bihar which will make you contemplate the present scenario.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is liable to answer all the questions. Good governance isn’t only about building roads, generating electricity or forming a coalition government. Seems like he doesn’t consider safety of women an essential part of good governance. Perhaps this is the reason why he neither speaks up on atrocities on women nor does he take serious measures in dealing with such problems.

It is not easy to forget the incident of Jehanabad . The video that captured eve teasing with a minor girl on 28 April which later went viral on social media. In another appalling video, a group of men were trying to grope a girl and take off her clothes to rape her.

These crimes are taking place in broad daylight. Are these goons and miscreants really afraid of the law?

If you think they stop after raping, molesting and assaulting a women, then you are wrong. They are audacious enough to shoot a video and post it on social media platforms.

In recent months, crime against women have increased rampantly. In 2010, the number of such crimes was 6,790, while in 2016, it has increased to 12,8783.

Several questions pop up - Is the image of good governance changing? Are the laws not stringent enough? Or is merely political ignorance?

Remember, October 2017, 20 km away from Patna, a 22-year-old committed a horrendous crime. When the women opposed him, he brutally inserted a rod in her private parts. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment at a hospital.

How are the criminals forgetting the difference between ‘Jangalraaj’ and ’Sushasan’?

In the present situation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar needs to tighten his grip to control not only such criminals, but also over all those people who have such mentalities.
