1. Karnataka Bypolls: Cong-JD(S) Win 4 Seats, Bag BJP Bastion Ballari

Counting for five constituencies going to bypolls took place in Karnataka on Tuesday, 6 November, with the Congress-JD(S) winning the Jamkhandi and Ramanagaram Assembly seats and Ballari and Mandya Lok Sabha seats, while BJP won the Shimoga Lok Sabha seat.

While the Congress dubbed the win as a reflection of the mood of the nation, the BJP called the party’s poor show a “warning”.

2. Maneka Gandhi Calls Tigress Avni’s Killing a ‘Murder’

Days after tigress Avni was shot dead in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district, shooter Asgar Ali maintained that he shot her in self-defence and denied the “trigger-happy allegations” levelled against him.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi had said, "It is nothing but a straight case of crime. Despite several requests from many stakeholders, (Sudhir) Mungantiwar, minister for forests, Maharashtra, gave orders for the killing."

3. US Midterm Elections Underway

Republicans have a huge advantage as they seek to hold or expand their 51-49 Senate majority, with the battle for control running mostly through states that President Donald Trump won in 2016.

Out of the 35 Senate contests taking place on Tuesday, 6 November, 10 involve Democratic incumbents seeking re-election in states that Trump won, often handily. He's spending much of the final week before the election traveling to those states in the hope that it will nudge his supporters to the polls.
