Janamashtami Fervour Grips Devotees Across the Country
From Mumbai to Mathura, devotees marked the birth of lord Krishna with much fanfare.
Amid tight security at temples and shrines in the area, Mathura and Brijbhumi celebrated Janmastami with religious fervour on 15 August.
Temples in Mathura, Vrindavan, Goverdhan, Nandgaon and Gokul were richly decorated for the occasion as pilgrims from across the country thronged the temple-town to offer their obeisance.
The day which is meant to mark the birth of Lord Krishna began with the sound of 'shahnai' and drums at the Srikrishna Janmasthan temple. Later, Gurusharnanand Maharaj performed the aarati of the principal deity at the Leela Manch.
Janmashtami at Gokul was be celebrated in the form of Nandotsava on 16 August.
Raja Thakur Temple's head priest Bacchu Maharaj said the 'palana' (swing) for child Krishna was decorated with jewels, 'jari' (cloth woven from gold threads) and flowers.
Police and para-military forces had been deployed at all important areas. No untoward incident has been reported, District Magistrate Arvind Malappa Bangari said.
Security personnel have been deployed in large numbers at the Dwarkadheesh Temple, the Krishna Balram Temple (ISCKON) and the Bankey Behari Temple, and the Sri Krishna Janamsthan, he said.
