Muharram is not just a month, it is a reminder of the bloody Battle of Karbala, in which Muslims lost Imam Hussain, who was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Shia community, in particular, mourns the loss of Imam Hussain, who lost his life in the Battle of Karbala, along with his few companions, while battling the huge army sent by Yazid I, the Umayyad Caliph.

The atrocities inflicted upon the family members of Prophet Muhammad is said to be extremely brutal.

Shias across the world employ various forms of mourning from beating their chests to hurting their backs with a chain of spikes that leaves the devotees covered in blood.

Shia Muslims in India too practice the same tradition.
