Germany Celebrates the Legalisation of Same-Sex Marriage

Lawmakers voted 393 for legalising “marriage for everybody” and 226 against, with four abstentions.

Dozens of members and supporters of the LGBT community gathered outside the German chancellery to celebrate the vote to legalise gay marriage.

German lawmakers on Friday voted to legalise same-sex marriage after a short but emotional debate, bringing the country in line with many of its Western peers. Speaking outside the Chancellery, gay rights activist Soeren Landmann described the vote as “historical”.

Lawmakers voted 393 for legalising "marriage for everybody" and 226 against, with four abstentions.
