The collapse of a five-story residential building in south Mumbai's Bhendi Bazar area on 31 August left at least 12 people dead and injured over a dozen others.

The Quint spoke to the relatives of the deceased and those still buried, as well as an eyewitness, to understand how the tragedy unfolded. Rescue operations are underway, and around 35 people are still feared to be trapped under the rubble. 10 fire engines have been rushed to the spot.

The children who attended the kindergarten in the building escaped by a whisker, as the building collapsed at around 8:30 am, an hour before their classes were to begin.

It is not known yet whether the building was on the list of dangerous structures under MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) limits. The incident occurred two days after the city received torrential rainfall, which is suspected to have damaged the building.
