Double the medal, twice the celebration and that held true not just for Dutee Chand’s family but for the whole village Chaka Gopalpur in Odisha after she won two silver medals at the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.
While the villagers took to bursting crackers and distributing sweets, her mother and sister were at a loss for words.
Chand joined the legendary PT Usha in the list of athletes who have won more than one medal at the Asian Games as Chand won a silver in the 200m event on Wednesday. Earlier, she had finished second in the women's 100m dash on Sunday. The Indian sprinter, who clocked 23.2 seconds, finished behind Bahrain’s Edidiong Odiong.
Her road to glory wasn’t smooth at all. She was barred from participating in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games by the Indian Athletics Federation due to a ‘gender case’ where they claimed that her body produced more testosterone than the permissible level. Chand fought her case and won which allowed her to make her Asian Games debut in 2018 and what a glorious debut it was as she won two silvers and both her events.
