The protesting doctors at Kolkata’s hospitals defied West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ultimatum to resume work and said the protests will continue till their demands are met.

Their demand?

The chief minister should meet the two victims who were thrashed, and also provide better protection for doctors in medical colleges. Some of them said that they don’t want security personnel anymore but a proper police force stationed outside the colleges and hospitals.

Mamata then took to social media to appeal to the doctors to withdraw the strike.

Earlier, around 12 in the noon, Mamata had asked the doctors to withdraw the protest within four hours and warned them of action if the order is not followed. She had also alleged that the agitation of junior doctors was a conspiracy of BJP and CPI(M).

Meanwhile, heavy forces have been deployed at NRS and SSKM Hospitals in Kolkata.

A deadly assault on junior doctors in Kolkata's NRS Medical College and Hospital triggered the backlash. Two interns – Paribaha Mukherjee and Yash Tekhwani – were seriously injured by family members of Mohammed Shahid, a 77-year-old patient who died on Monday night.

The patients suffered as they were denied entry into the hospitals for treatment.
