Democracy Is Threatened: Yashwant Sinha on SC’s Dramatic Turn

A day after four senior Supreme Court judges pointed fingers at the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra saying the apex court is “not in order,” disgruntled BJP leader Yashwant Sinha expressed his concerns saying “democracy is threatened.”

The Supreme Court judges have revealed that the court is ‘not in order.’ If the Parliament is not in order and the SC is also not in order, then democracy is clearly threatened.

The senior BJP leader emphasised that the four Supreme Court judges chose to speak to the media as they were left with no choice. He also alleged that the senior cabinet ministers were afraid to speak up.

When you reach the end of terror you raise your voice against injustice. You also tend to express your agony and pain. Obviously, the threshold was crossed. The threshold is being crossed in various other matters as well. If democracy is threatened, the government has to speak up.

Commenting on the unprecedented situation the former finance minister says that it’s the national duty of the country’s political parties to take note of the revelations made by the four Supreme Court judges.

We shall be failing in our national duty if we don’t take note of what they have said. If the judges have said that democracy is in danger then the political parties of the country should be the most concerned.

Sinha also lamented the manner in which the Parliament was being compromised with short sessions and took up the space allotted for debates.

Parliament of India is compromised. The sessions are not held properly. The winter session was curtailed as there was election in a particular state (Gujarat).

On Friday, 12 January, Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph appealed to the nation to preserve the independence of the judiciary, asserting that the “Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra has left us with no option but to go public about what is going on within the collegium.”
