Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday said China will not tolerate any Taiwanese separatist plan and that any attempts for Taiwan’s independence will be met with opposition.

China has the "confidence and sufficient ability to defeat" separatist attempts in any form, Xi said at the opening of the Communist Party Congress.

The one-China principle holds that Taiwan is part of China and the Communist government in Beijing is China's sole legitimate government.

Speaking to 2,287 carefully hand-picked delegates at the 19th national congress of China's Communist Party, Xi further said, "we have provided a brand new choice for those countries and nations who want to modernise themselves but at the same time want to remain the characteristics of themselves."

The president also said China's global influence keeps on growing.
