Basanti Ho, a 26-year-old specially-abled woman, was rescued by the district administration after being kept chained for over six years at her home in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, ANI reported on Saturday, 1 September.

Basanti’s family claims she would break things, run away or tear her clothes off when left unchained. They also claimed that the family had tried getting medical help for her, but all their efforts went in vain.

Basanti has been transferred to the district hospital for better treatment.

She (Basanti) has been referred here from the sub-regional hospital in Karanjia. She has been suffering from schizophrenia for the past six years. I have admitted the patient in the medicine ward where she will be taken care of.
