Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials conducted raids at Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram’s residence in Chennai.

Raids were done in at least 14 different locations, including Mumbai, Chandigarh and Gurugram.

The early morning raids at the former Finance and Home Minister's residence were conducted in connection with Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearances given to INX Media (now called 9X Media) when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, and Chidambaram was then the Finance Minister.

Motivated by Karti, the FIPB had apparently granted clearance to the channel at a much lower rate. It is alleged that while the clearance was only for Rs 4 crore, the actual foreign investment was much higher, and this was allowed because Karti allegedly facilitated the deal.

The Congress today said that none of its leaders or that of the opposition would be cowed down by the politics of "revenge and vendetta" which had "become the DNA of this BJP government".

The party accused the BJP of being blinded by revenge to target its opponents and said that it would continue to expose the saffron party before the people.

However, BJP expressed its satisfaction over the raids and called P Chidambaram a ‘crooked liar’:

The raids have to take place to get the documents and get incriminating evidence which they have kept. He is a liar, cheat and a fraud. He has to be in jail.
