Hours after the Centre’s Goods and Services Tax bill came into effect, protests have broken out across the country over its implementation.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad, Samajwadi Party workers staged a Rail Roko agitation, blocking the way of Gomti Ganga Express.

The picketers denounced GST, while adding that it was imposed in a unilateral manner and had a pernicious effect on the economy, much like the Centre’s demonetisation initiative.

Protests were also held in jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar, where a group of people demanded that the sensitive state be excluded from the ambit of a unified tax regime.

In Agra, traders compared GST to a premature baby, which they claimed “must not be allowed to live.”
