Haryana’s Palwal witnessed a horrific incident early on Tuesday morning, as a man went on a murdering spree and killed six people using an iron rod.
The crime took place within 100 metres of the police station early on Tuesday and was recorded in a CCTV camera that led to his arrest.
The accused, identified as Naresh Dhankar, is an ex-Army man who appeared to be ‘mentally weak’, as per media reports.
Naresh Dhankar served as a lieutenant in the Army and left under Medical Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). He is employed in the Haryana agriculture department, The Indian Express reported, and is reportedly 40 to 45 years old.
In the town 80 kms away from Delhi, the murders took place at different locations between 2 to 4 am, as per The Indian Express. All murders are believed to be committed by Dhankar. Police told India Today that Naresh's victims were chosen at random, saying he "attacked whoever he came across on the streets".
Dhankar first murdered a woman in a hospital and then four other people between Agra Road and Minar Gate of Palwal, before killing his last victim, a security guard. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem, the report added.
Dhankar was found in an injured state in Adarsh Colony of Palwal, the police said. Despite being injured, the accused reportedly tried to attack police officers as well. India Today added that the accused was first taken to a civil hospital but later admitted to a hospital in Faridabad.
Police said a high alert was sounded in the town.
