A Mumbai court on Monday sentenced Abu Salem to life imprisonment in the 1993 serial blast case, while two other – Tahir Merchant and Firoz Khan – were awarded death sentence. The victims, although welcomed the court’s verdict, were unhappy that Salem was not awarded capital punishment.

Abu Salem was extradited from Portugal. As per the extradition treaty, Abu Salem could not be given a death sentence and hence was awarded life sentence, the maximum punishment possible under this treaty.
