‘Don’t Be a Sucker,’ is what the film told Nazis back in the day, but it’s message rings true in Trump’s America.
Sad to say, but an anti-Nazi short film that was released in 1943 is still a relevant warning for America today. In the context of the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, the film called Don’t be a Sucker – like literally – has suddenly become viral.
Violence broke out in Charlottesville last week over the decision to remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee. White supremacists, neo-Nazis and far-right extremists clashed with those who supported the removal, leading to the death of a 32-year-old woman.
Reacting to the violence, President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that "there is blame on both sides", thereby not clearly condemning the action of the white supremacists.
While back in the day the short warned against Nazism-like prejudice and discrimination, people are saying that in the present scenario it cautions about Trump's divided America.
Anthropologist Michael Oman-Reagan shared a clip from the film on Twitter, and it has so far been retweeted more than 160k times.
