Irom Sharmila’s Mother Refuses to Meet Her Until AFSPA is Repealed
Iron Lady Irom Sharmila approached the court to break her 16-year-long hunger strike protesting AFSPA.
Iron Lady Irom Sharmila’s brother Singhjit Irom has not been able to meet his sister since she took the decision to end her fast, saying he was not allowed to meet her.
He also said that their mother will not meet Sharmila till she is victorious and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is repealed from Manipur.
Sharmila appeared in court on Tuesday to break her 16-year-long fast against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Sharmila will reportedly contest in the Assembly polls in Manipur in 2017.
In her 16-year-long fast, none of the Prime Ministers met Sharmila, despite her expressed request.
The gruelling exercise of giving up consumption of food and water, and a great deal of personal sacrifice by Sharmila, has not moved the government to change their position on AFSPA.
In turn, she was charged for attempting suicide in 2006 for undertaking a fast until death at Jantar Mantar.
