Amid growing concern over deteriorating air quality in the National Capital, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain surveyed the Bhalswa landfill on Saturday.

Jain was accompanied by his cabinet colleague and Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain, who blamed crop-burning in neighbouring Punjab as the primary cause of Delhi’s poor air quality. Jain, on the other hand, said that his government intends to put an end to the menace of smoke that bellows out of Delhi’s biggest dumping ground.

As Delhi witnesses the worst for in 17 years, over 1,800 MCD schools in the city have declared holiday. While a couple of private schools scrapped outdoor activity, others have declared holidays in the wake of falling air quality.

Alarmed by rising air pollution, the National Green Tribunal recently on Friday pulled up the Centre and the Delhi Government over their failure to curb the rising menace of air pollution. The court also summoned environment secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab in connection with the matter.
