Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that the Congress would end the growing drug menace in Punjab in a month if the party was voted to power.

“If Congress comes to power, drug problem will be curbed in a month because we intend to give more powers to the police,” Rahul said while leading an anti-drug protest in Jalandhar.

Rahul attacked the Akali Dal-led govt in Punjab over the controversy surrounding the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Udta Punjab which tackles the issue of drugs in the state.

“Four years ago when I came to Punjab and urged the Govt to address drug issue, I was mocked by the Akalis. Movies are being banned, they have banned Udta Punjab, they still don’t want to accept the reality,” Rahul said.

Rahul Gandhi who was accompanied by members of the Congress’ Punjab unit including senior party leader Amarinder Singh, also highlighted the alleged deterioration in the law and order situation in the state.

“There are good police officers in Punjab police who want to work but SAD Govt isn’t giving them the required freedom to function. We will fight together to bring Punjab back on the track,” Rahul said.
