Former Congress leader, Himanta Biswa Sarma, joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) last year and became State Election Committee Convenor. The 47-year-old holds sway in Assam, making him one of the important figures in Assam Assembly Elections.

The Quint interviewed Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is the BJP candidate from Guwahati’s prestigious Jalukbari constituency, which goes to polls in the second phase of assembly election on 11 April.

Last year on 23 August, Sarma announced that he was leaving the Congress government. Critising the Tarun Gogoi government, he said, “Tarun Gogoi has become arrogant. He has moved away from the agenda of development and is only working for family politics.’’

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity, he said, “PM Modi is more in Assam than in his own home state. And his popularity is a big asset to the BJP’s election campaign in Assam.
