The rape and murder of a 21-year old girl has rocked Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district.

The incident happened on the intervening night of 10 and 11 May. The girl had gone to watch a Bihu function at Tamulbari with her friends, two boys and a girl. On their way back, they were accosted by six boys.

We were roaming on the street when the boys accosted us. Without any provocation, they hit me. They chased the girl and continued to beat me. Then four of the accused took me to the girl’s house and told her family that we were found in a compromising position and when we were confronted, the girl fled from the scene.

The accused allegedly raped the girl and then killed her. The body was later found hanging from a tree.

The locals and the Karbi Students Association have hit the road, demanding justice.

We want justice for the girl, the accused should be arrested and we demand capital punishment for them.

So far, three arrests have been made and the three other suspects are on the run. It is believed that all the accused are minors, so verifying their age will be a challenge for the police.
