Andy Murray failed to defend his Wimbledon title on 12 July, but the British tennis player earned brownie points after he shot down a reporter who forgot the champion women of American tennis.

The three-time Grand Slam winner was knocked out in the quarter-finals after losing 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 1-6 to American Sam Querrey as the hip injury that dogged the world number one throughout the tournament finally got the better of him.

At the post-match press conference, a journalist began a question by saying “Sam is the first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009...” when Murray interrupted him to interject the words “male player”.

“I beg your pardon,” said the journalist, after which Murray reminded him Querrey was the first male US player to reached a semi-final since 2009 and not the first player.

“First male player, that’s for sure,” the journalist said, with a laugh, while Andy Murray looked on unamused.

Besides Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys, the Williams sisters – Venus and Serena – have played in multiple Grand Slams finals
