Local Motors, based in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler, has revealed plans for an electric car it hopes to offer for sale next year that will be made on demand with a 3D printer.
It will offer buyers the option to customise their vehicles to meet their personal needs.
The company says the first version of the vehicle, made only for neighbourhood use, will cost between US$18,000 and $30,000, with a highway-capable version anticipated by the end of 2016.
Called Strati, the world’s first 3D-printed car was unveiled last year by Local Motors and remains a prototype.
So for us, that was a big first because it showed we could print a car, put in the driving bits and drive it away on the road around the convention centre, so we’ve been very busy for the last six to seven months because now we’re getting ready for putting this into production.
— John B. Rogers Jr., CEO and Co-founder of Local Motors
Originally, Local Motors had hoped to release the neighbourhood version by the end of 2015, but that has been pushed back to next year.
